Fitness Over 40: What I Share Is My Training Life

I’m getting tired of feeling like I have to explain 10,000 things every time I show you my training.

“Go to a doctor. Get evaluated. This might not be suitable for you. That might not be applicable to someone else.”

I understand why those distinctions matter.

But I also feel limited when I can’t simply document my training life without feeling like I have to write a thousand-page disclaimer.

Fitness Over 40: My Training Life Is Not a Fairy Story

I show you how I live and practice my fitness training life.

You want me to pretend there are no obstacles? I'd be a liar.

I don't want to hide my training life so only the so-called ideal ways to train are seen. That's not real. It's pushing a fairy story about the body that never breaks down or says hell to the no.

Do you know how many of you who follow me or train with me tell me this: “My body is inflamed. I have epicondylitis, golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, medial or lateral, or both.”

Usually, this is when all training goes out the window for you!

Of course I have to ask: What are you doing about it? Is it a chronic pain situation or a flare-up? Did you suddenly increase the intensity or change your training?

It can feel like someone has told you it's a death sentence for your arm training or upper-body training. But does that mean there is no other way to train or work on the problem?

Why would I have so many training videos featuring how I work around my aches and pains in my fitness over 40 practice if I did not have a way to do it?

When you take time off to heal, or get another cortisone shot that makes you feel better, sometimes the relief is temporary. And then what comes back? The same problem.

Over and over.

Fitness after 40 has the same elbow problems as when I was younger but now they don't stop me.

This is where I wonder: Why don't you want to train, or at least be open to new alternative ways to train to gain muscle?

That is what I do! That is how I keep going!

Many times you check out from training life because you don't know what to do. Rest is essential, but there can also be a legitimate place for appropriate training in managing and preventing some problems.

Fitness Over 40: Temporary Relief Is Not the End of the Work

Why do you think I record my self-therapy sessions for my body recovery?

Why do I share all the tools I use to work on my own body?

I’m not your healer. I’m showing you how I work on my own recovery.

It takes dedication. It is not a quick fix. It's trial and error.

Just because the pain is temporarily gone because I numbed it with my body self-massage work does not mean anything long term.

Fitness after 40 for me means smarter training or I end up with no body to train!

Often I find myself expressing my joy after finding another “solution,” just to notice, oh, that did not last, did it?
But then, at this time of my fitness over 40 life, and having been training for nearly 30 years, what is not “temporary”?
Training is not permanent. It is what I do, hopefully without end, but it is not a guaranteed body activity at all.
And what I eat today? Not a permanent hunger solution, is it? No, it serves the day today.

My point is...

And yeah, today is that passion rant in me.

I get annoyed about the perception of what fitness life can be like for someone like me who loves my training, but not all the time.

And I still show up!

Because I do not want to quit, I adjust. I rest, but I also train. Better. Smarter.

Because I do not want to lose the day if there is a way to seize the training day, and that IS what I ultimately care about.

What do I do when my golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow comes back?

What do I do with my hamstrings?

How do I find a way to keep training when something isn’t working? What about my shoulders? And lower back? Adductors? Knees? Feet? Hands?

Pretty much everything has pushed me to know how to fix things for myself and for many others, but it is not a 'cure' of a quick fix that lasts for a lifetime. There are none of those in my world, I'm a realist and I keep it that way for myself.

I’m not telling you that what I do is suitable for you. I’m showing you what I do.

And I don’t want to hide that.

How many times do you think I’ve had elbow pain? It comes and goes. Why do you think I train forearms like an obsessive? Because I’ve found that it helps me.

Why do you think I have extra training programs that are not basic at all? Because there are things I need to do to keep my body training.

Fitness Over 40: Necessity Makes Me Find a Way

Everyone wants a simple program. Yes, I provide simple and programs. The ones without any limitations are perfect candidates for bodybuilding training programs that allow max overloading with no end! That is not my own fitness life anymore, and most of you my clients and followers are not at all in that category either!

It means my workouts and training program needs are always simple and straight-forward

That’s why I have all these playlists, extra exercises, workarounds, and different ways of training. They exist because I needed them. I found a way to work with something, and I made it available.

You might look at one of those options and think, “I have something going on here too. Maybe there’s a way I can train around it.”

That doesn’t mean I’m going to heal your pain.

I’m not a doctor, and I’m not promising that my solution is your solution.

I’m showing you that there might be another way to approach your training.

If something is advanced, I warn you. If I say, “Big fat warning on this move,” I mean it. I’m showing you why I do it and how I do it for myself. That is not an invitation to copy something you are not prepared for.

You have to be an independent-thinking person.

Observe. Learn. Take what interests you to your medical provider if you need evaluation or clearance. Then decide what is appropriate for you.

I’m a coach. I teach. I train. I share what I practice.

I don’t want to spend my training life hiding what I do because I cannot explain every possible thing that could go wrong for every possible person.

This Isn’t Fitness Netflix

I’m documenting my training. I make programs, from simple to advanced, because training is not one identical experience for everyone.

The ideas are abundant.

The practice is individual.

Take what is useful.

Be responsible for your choices.

Get the help you need. And train.
