BACK WORKOUT TIPS FOR BUILDING A MUSCULAR BACK
Back workout tips for building more muscle size, thickness and definition for a strong, well-built physique.

I love back workouts to build a classic V-taper.
What's a v-taper? It's the shape I create with back workouts and shoulder training to build my body.
I want wide shoulders. Narrow waist. Athletic hips. It's Symmetry.
That’s the bodybuilding look I love, and I love sculpting my body.
Yesterday during my back workout and focusing on training my lats, it brought me back to something I’ve always wanted:
More lower lats!
I could never have too wide lats so my back workouts focus on width, not just upper back thickness.
Back workouts require attention to detail, not just slam the weights and hope to hit the muscles to create quality definition, not just a typical smooth dolphin kind of upper back!
Back workouts are more technically demanding than the simple kindergarten level of building muscle: training those biceps...That is easy compared to back workouts for gaining muscle not just lift more weight!

If you've noticed that many bodybuilding competitors seem to lack adequate mid back muscle definition and do not showcase wide lats either, it might be because back workouts designed to gain muscle size, not just 'get stronger' like a powerlifter require dropping your ego to train better, smarter and gain more than just a little bit!... Don't get upset I am just sharing my observations.
For my back muscles I have one smaller lat and one thicker trap. I also have various asymmetrical body parts allover.
I always train to even them out and bring up weaker areas but there is no certain approach I know of that literally works like one long universe how to guide. Ha! It is more a matter of constant trial and error and knowing that the beauty of training is the longer you've been training the harder it gets to keep gaining!
Before you get butt hurt that I'm talking about muscles and physique looks, let me remind you that I share about my training life and what I do, how I do it and why I do what I do.
I use myself as the forever student so nobody gets their feelings hurt.
I have weaknesses, short-comings and all that typical. and I always love to call myself out on my BS!
And I see my younger self in training as the perfect challenge to get better results. You see, after nearly 30 years of training my body is rolling its eyes to me if I don't train to gain...!
Trust me, I used to train like a sloppy youngster, and I got mad when someone called me out on it. I trained hard and I trained heavy and I ignored working muscles I found BORING! I just skipped it! Can you imagine?!
Nowadays I am much more focused and quality in my training is a must. I am too old as well to train like I can recover the way I used to!
I work better, smarter and go straight into my weaknesses so I can bring those up and gain more muscle.
Somehow when I show my younger self in training with videos and my younger self's philosophy people get touchy! Hey, I am just talking about myself and the criticism is out of pure self love and confidence.
It comes down to the essential question:
PAULINE, DO YOU WANT TO GAIN MUSCLE OR DO YOU JUST WANNA TRAIN THE SAME AND STAY THE SAME? I know the answer!
Now, some fitness people nowadays are super sensitive about this whole bodybuilding training passion.
Everyone seems do downplay wanting to build a muscular physique, a bodybuilding look, not just muscle function.
Well, I keep it real.
I am not training to just get stronger. I want to LOOK stronger.
My back workouts reflect my fitness life philosophy:
I build my body and train my body the way I do to gain muscle to decorate my body with.
No diamonds, jewelry or fancy cars could ever bring that kind of self-built and self-made satisfaction to my daily training life.

That is why I do what I do.
My back workouts are intended to be more than functional you bet.
By focusing on muscle details not just training like I want to lift the most weight and then show a certificate that I am the strongest in the gym while using horrible form on my lifts, I end up strong enough for my own liking.
My back workouts are designed to kill my ego and build more muscle allover and that is what I want!
I look at my body.I decide what I want more of.Then I train for it.
I’ve been training for nearly 30 years and I still experiment.
I don't marry any certain back workout style, I use them all. I create back workouts that keep my body from stagnating. I train my body strategically to hopefully avoid injuries, but there is no such thing as 'lifting with a safety guarantee'.
I'm inviting you to try my back workouts.
Remember, how you perform the exercises matter!
When I coach my clients online who are enrolled in my personal training program where I show up to be your remote trainer guess what I ask for? Show me your lifts, and use your real work load, because how you lift changes when the weight gets heavier.

Here are my 10 tips for real back workouts for gaining muscle
Learn the muscle anatomy of the back. That way you can see where muscles actually are located and how they attach to your joints.
Realize that how your back muscles are attaching on your joints is different for different people. Your genes dictate this.
Avoid blaming your genetics for not having muscle definition or muscle size. Instead push your potential to gain muscle fully!
Back workouts require you to study your lifting technique so when you record your training be ready to feel embarrassed that you're not at all lifting the way you actually think!
Stop using just one low rep range or use higher reps with light weight to 'avoid size' or 'just get defined'. That keeps you puny, not stronger looking.

Stop cheating on your pull-ups! Unless you just want to get over the bar, stop that typical 'I want to do a pullup, I forget I train to gain back muscles, not just ignore my upper midback, pull myself up with my arms and shoulders!.....:-)

Choose back workouts that let you train with as much resistance as you can for the rep range and rest periods in your training routine. Because muscles don't care about 'how you do it', they need the challenge of harder work than before, regularly, to respond.
Upper back workouts include rows and pulls, for overall body muscle gains of course we have deadlifts etc. The focus in this blog is back workouts with the upper back in mind. Make sure you train both rows and pulls -not just rows or pulls.
Bonus tip! Stop wishing to gain back muscles, start training with back workouts that actually train your back like you mean it's serious business.
You gotta stay committed in your training if you want to build muscle size and muscle definition.
It is not a quick fix and not a one month program from having trained nothing and now you saw a strong looking back in the gym, now you want to build one you too....I know the feeling, that is what got me started Feb 20, 1999 when I saw Arnold Schwarzenegger on the cover of a muscle & fitness magazine.
